Being College and Career Ready after high school also means being prepared for the "real world". No recent studies have been done since the pandemic but if you look back a couple years you will find that about 74% of high school students felt that they were not fully prepared for the professional world. Due to the setbacks that schools, students, and families faced during the pandemic we can safely assume it has only gotten worse as schools work hard to play "catch-up". More than ever it is important for us as parents to be our kids advocate and make sure they are truly prepared for life after high school.

The transition from High School to College can be an overwhelming one if you are not prepared for it. In fact, about one/third of undergraduate students either end up transferring or dropping out during one point in their college career. Staying in college is becoming increasingly difficult for many. When we look at some statistics, we will see that back in 2016, only 39% of ACT tested graduates met 3 or more of the 4 ACT college readiness benchmarks (in English, math, reading and science). One out of three, 34% did not meet any benchmark indicating they are ill prepared in all four core subject areas.

Every year in the US numerous college students discover that, despite being fully eligible to attend college, they are not ready for post-secondary studies. Because of this, millions of dollars are spent on remediation course work (classes not credit bearing but cost the same).

Many high schools will have a counselor on hand to help you/your student prep for college. Many of these same counselors are overworked and overloaded with students, and therefore can’t always give all of the information necessary to really prep for life after high school. This is really at no fault to them as many schools face so many budget cuts and can’t afford to have the proper programs in place. It’s our job as their parents to fill those gaps where we can.
